Cody Rhodes has unique talent for connecting with fans, which played a significant role in his rise to becoming the Undisputed WWE Champion. He is currently regarded as one of the biggest babyfaces in WWE but has now addressed turning heel as well.

Despite being a prominent babyface currently, there is a segment of the audience that is interested in seeing Cody Rhodes transition to a heel persona. Rhodes has had several runs as a heel throughout his career, so such a shift wouldn’t be unfamiliar territory for him.

While speaking to The Pivot Podcast, Cody Rhodes shared his thoughts on the complexities of being a top heel in professional wrestling. He expressed a strong desire to be the champion but also acknowledged the unique creative space occupied by a true villain. Rhodes mentioned the vulnerability and openness required to play a convincing bad guy, emphasizing the need for a ruthless and aggressive approach, especially on the microphone.

Cody Rhodes noted that a growing number of fans are eager to see him take on this role, but he questioned whether they truly understand what they are asking for. Rhodes explained that embracing this character would involve going “scorched Earth,” potentially offending some groups and facing backlash. He stressed that the essence of being a villain is to be disliked, not admired or seen as cool, unlike iconic figures such as The Rock.

“I want to be the champ. I want to be the, like, there’s a beauty if you can commit to being a bad, bad guy. It’s a unique space creatively. You’ve got to be really vulnerable and open, and you’ve got to be blood hungry in terms of how you are on the microphone. There’s like this growing sect of fans that wants to see that happen for me at some point, and I understand that. I don’t know if they know what they’re asking for, though. I don’t know if you’re really wishing for that. It’s scorched Earth, yeah, and then you might be like, ‘Oh, we don’t like that. No, that’s rude to that group of people.’ No, no, like, that’s the job. Someone’s going to come out here and beat me up in a minute, but before they do, I’m going to talk my trash. That’s the thing. You have to really go scorched Earth, and in 2024, that is hard for anyone to understand that you’re not meant to be cool. You’re not meant to be the next Rock. You’re meant to be a bad guy or a bad girl.”

Even The Undertaker believes Cody Rhodes could be good heel. Regardless, only time will tell if The American Nightmare will embrace his dark side and become a heel again in the future.
