Cody Rhodes has contemplated the prospect of stepping into the realm of MMA. With WWE and UFC sharing an affiliation under the TKO umbrella, the idea of crossover talent has gained increased attention. This trend was not entirely new, as notable figures like Ronda Rousey, Brock Lesnar, and Ken Shamrock had ventured into both realms even before the TKO era.
In recent conversation with Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Cody Rhodes delved into the possibilities of talent crossing over between WWE and UFC. When discussing potential WWE stars who could transition to WWE, Cody acknowledged Conor McGregor as an obvious choice but suggested that McGregor still had unfinished business in the world of MMA, stating, “I think he’s got more fighting left in him.”
Turning his attention to the question of which WWE wrestler could potentially make the leap to UFC, Cody raised the intriguing prospect of some tough individuals within WWE. He mentioned, “What would be funny to me is if anyone could crossover from here. We have legitimately very tough guys like Bobby Lashley. I’m always very curious to see how one of us would do. I know in the past it’s not always worked out for everybody, but I am curious to see who is the first to take that jump.”
Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar, both associated with WWE, have experienced varying degrees of success in their respective MMA careers. Cody even brought up the example of CM Punk, who tried his hand at MMA.
When Cody was asked about whether he would consider pursuing MMA himself, he disclosed that he had mentioned the idea to his wife two years ago. He expressed his desire for a single fight but humorously noted his wife’s response, stating, “I think I was looking for some sort of massive financial windfall, I don’t know what it was, but I told her I wanted to do one fight and she absolutely let me know that would not be happening. Unless you convince her, it’s not going to happen. Maybe it’s for the best.”
If the scenario were to materialize, Cody humorously suggested, “Give me the worst guy possible. Give me a freebie upfront, for sure.”
Cody Rhodes, a former amateur wrestler who achieved success in high school by winning the Georgia State Tournament as both a Junior and Senior, adds an intriguing layer to the ongoing discussion of crossover talent between the realms of professional wrestling and mixed martial arts.
