In an unexpected twist, it has come to light through Mundo Deportivo that, despite being included in the matchday squad, sources close to Dani Olmo’s camp have expressed doubts about his participation in tonight’s game against Athletic Club, citing complications in finalising his registration with LaLiga.

It is no secret that Barcelona are still working to complete the signing of Olmo, but there is not much optimism within the club just hours before the match.

The club hoped that recent player departures would create enough salary space to register him. Ilkay Gundogan has officially left and both Mika Faye and Clement Lenglet are close to finalising their moves to Rennes and Atletico de Madrid, respectively.

What’s the issue with registration?

The fact of the matter is that these transfers have not been fully completed, leaving Barça in a tricky situation regarding Olmo’s registration.

Even if these deals are finalised soon, Barcelona will still need to go through several steps to register Olmo with both LaLiga and the German Federation, given his signing is not yet officially recognised by the Spanish football authorities.

This bureaucratic process adds another layer of complexity, further dampening hopes of Olmo taking to the pitch against Athletic Bilbao. However, if these processes are done, Barcelona can still register him five minutes before the match.

There was a possibility that some directors from the club could personally guarantee the funds needed for Olmo’s registration. However, this option seems unfeasible due to the large amount involved.

As a result, the atmosphere around the club and within Olmo’s camp remains pessimistic regarding his involvement in today’s game.

The situation is still unfolding, but as things stand, it appears unlikely that Olmo will be able to make his debut for Barcelona against Athletic Bilbao today.
