David Seaman says he ‘knows for a fact’ that Arsenal are ‘trying like mad’ to sign a ‘marquee striker’ before the January transfer window closes.
The Gunners have been linked with a number of forward following Gabriel Jesus’ serious ACL injury.
Jesus, 27, is set to miss the rest of the season after he broke down during Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
Some pundits were urging Arsenal to sign a new striker before Jesus’ setback but the Brazilian’s absence only reinforces the idea that Mikel Arteta needs a new attacker to arrive at the Emirates Stadium.
Jesus has only scored seven Premier League goals over the past two seasons and his Arsenal team-mate Kai Havertz has also blown hot and cold in front of goal.
Arsenal have been linked with moves for Benjamin Sesko, Dusan Vlahovic Victor Osimhen in recent weeks and Seaman believes the club are hard at work to bring a new striker to the club.
‘Everybody is talking about signing a new striker and that does look like what we need,’ Seaman told talkSPORT.
‘It looks like we’re trying to get a striker but to get a marquee striker, the finished article, in January… that doesn’t happen very often.
‘Kai Havertz isn’t an out-and-out striker but he’s scored some important goals. It’s frustrating because I can feel the fans’ frustration growing. There’s a few rumblings now because we’re not where we want to be.
‘I know for a fact that they’re trying like mad to get one but whether it will be now or the summer, I don’t know.
‘There’s ones in the pipeline so we will have to wait and see if they get done.’
Arsenal scored more goals than in any other Premier League season last term as they amassed 89 points, finishing two behind Manchester City.
The Gunners have scored 43 goals in 22 league games this season – the fourth-most in the English top-flight.
‘Victor Osimhen has been heavily linked with Arsenal, as have the likes of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic,’ Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn told William Hill Vegas.
‘If you could guarantee Mikel Arteta that one of them can offer 20 to 25 goals a season, that would be great — but no one can guarantee that!
‘The Gunners need a striker to take them to the next level, and that is to win the Premier League. I would take any of those strikers — it doesn’t matter which one. What matters is who scores the most goals for this team and is the best fit.
‘Each option comes with its own attributes, but the priority is finding the one who can deliver goals consistently to fire Arsenal to the title. Addressing this issue in the squad could drive Arsenal to a league title.’
