Barcelona are set to receive a significant financial boost on the transfer deadline day thanks to former midfielder Nico Gonzalez.

The ex-La Masia talent left the Blaugrana to sign for FC Porto permanently in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth €8 million.

Barcelona retained a buyback option for the midfielder as well as a future sell-on clause for him, should Porto offload him to a different club and that clause is now set to pay off in a big way.

Man City to sign Nico Gonzalez

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are all set to sign Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto on the final day of the winter transfer window, which would mean a significant financial boost for Barcelona.

Nico has a €60 million release clause in his contract with the Portuguese heavyweights. While Manchester City have not directly activated it, as per the report they will pay the same amount as his termination clause with a different structure.

Nico has now been allowed to travel to England to complete his medical and make the transfer official before the transfer window slams shut later tonight.

Once the deal goes through as expected, Barcelona will pocket a sizeable portion of the fee that Porto will receive for Nico Gonzalez.

With Manchester City paying €60 million for him, 40% of that figure, i.e., €24 million will end up in the Blaugrana coffers.

Whether this leads to any late moves from the Catalans in the final hours of the deadline day remains to be seen.
