The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a majority in the Edo State House of Assembly following the defection of four lawmakers from opposition parties.
With the latest switch, the 24-member House now consists of 13 APC legislators, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds 11 seats.
The defectors include three PDP lawmakers—Donald Okugbe (Akoko Edo Constituency II), Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon South Constituency II), and Richard Edosa (Oredo West Constituency)—as well as Sunday Ojezele (Esan South East) from the Labour Party.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Edosa cited internal divisions within the PDP as a key reason for their departure, stating that the party was fractured from the national level down to the wards.
“We need to let the world know that the PDP is deeply divided at all levels—national, state, and local government. The same party that gave us the platform to win elections has also created the conditions for us to leave. We do not believe in division but in a new, united Edo State,” he said.
He added that their decision to join the APC was driven by confidence in Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership and vision for the state.
“We believe in the governor’s agenda and his commitment to development. That is why we have chosen to work with him and the APC to build a better Edo State,” Edosa declared.
Welcoming the defectors, House Minority Leader Eric Okaka (APC, Owan East) commended their decision, attributing it to Governor Okpebholo’s performance.
“We were in the minority, but with this defection, we now hold the majority. We will work closely with the governor to ensure Edo’s development benefits all residents,” Okaka said.
APC Chairman Jaret Tenebe, who formally received the new members at the party secretariat, handed them the party’s symbol, affirming that all members—old and new—stood on equal footing within the party.
He described the defection as a strong endorsement of Governor Okpebholo’s leadership.
“These lawmakers bring with them valuable experience and have recognised that the APC is the party of progress. They have seen the clarity of Governor Okpebholo’s vision and his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of Edo people,” Tenebe stated.
He added that their decision to join the APC reinforced the party’s commitment to strengthening the state’s economy, enhancing education, fostering social harmony, and safeguarding the welfare of its citizens.
