Emmy Rossum and Zoë Winters are set to star in the Amy Berryman play Walden this fall in a Second Stage Theater Off Broadway production.

To be directed by Whitney White (Jaja’s African Hair Braiding), Walden will begin previews on October 16 at the Tony Kiser Theater, with an official opening on November 7.

The play, which received its world premiere in May 2021 on London’s West End at the Harold Pinter Theatre (presented by Sonia Friedman Productions), is set in the near future. Stella (Rossum, of Shameless) and her fiancé Bryan are waiting at their remote cabin for Stella’s estranged twin sister, Cassie (Winters). The official synopsis: “Raised by their astronaut father to be NASA scientists, the twins have taken different paths: Cassie has just returned from a successful moon mission, while Stella has left NASA behind. When they reunite, old conflicts reignite, forcing the sisters to choose between staying on Earth or pursuing a future in space, as humanity’s fate hangs in the balance.”

The role of Bryan remains to be cast.

After its acclaimed West End debut, Walden made its American premiere at TheatreWorks in Hartford, Connecticut, in August 2021.

The production will mark Rossum’s Off Broadway debut. She played Christine in the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, and most recently portrayed the title character in Peacock’s limited series Angelyne, and starred in Apple’s limited series The Crowded Room opposite Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried.

Winters has appeared in stage productions at Playwrights Horizons, the Public Theatre, and Lincoln Center, among others. She just wrapped production on Celine Song’s A24 feature Materialists opposite Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. Best known for her role as Kerry on the HBO’s Succession, her other credits include Marc Turtletaub’s film Jules.

Walden will feature scenic design by Matt Saunders, costume design by Qween Jean, lighting design by Adam Honoré, and sound design by Lee Kinney. The production is being presented by special arrangement with Seaview and Soto Productions.
