As the National Women’s Soccer League concluded its first-ever NWSL x Liga MX Summer Cup tournament, staff and players reflected on the league’s growth and the challenges faced during the 30-game group stage.

With 14 NWSL teams, six Liga MX teams and 18 venues across the U.S. and Mexico, the tournament will see reigning NWSL Champions Gotham FC take on the Kansas City Current at CPKC Stadium. Although the group stage and semi-final took place during the Olympic break, the final will be held on Oct. 25.

Challenges and confusion around the tournament

Traditionally, sponsorships and the prize money allocated to players for major events take several months to complete. As the league was still working to identify prize money opportunities before the tournament began, it also became a concern raised by players on social media.
