Johnson previously worked with CFG as a coach last summer and is highly-rated by the group.
It will be the 43-year-old's first role outside the UK and a return to management after leaving Fleetwood in December 2023.
He was sacked by the Fishermen after just three months in charge.
Johnson has previously had spells in charge of Oldham, Barnsley, Bristol City, Sunderland and Hibernian.
During his time with the Black Cats he guided the club to victory in the EFL Trophy in 2021.
The former midfielder was also linked with becoming Wycombe boss back in January before Mike Dodds' appointment.
Discussing the Chairboys' reported interest, Johnson told the Bucks Free Press at the time: "I’ve seen a lot of media speculation, especially with the betting which has been quite interesting, but I think it’s important that I get the next one right."
Johnson is now set to head to the Belgian second tier, where Lommel sit 13th after 22 matches this season.
His first match in charge could come as early as this weekend, with a trip to league leaders Zulte Waregem on Saturday.
