It ended Switzerland 3 Hungary 1, an excellent performance from Fabian Schar and his international teammates.
The Swiss dominating the first half and totally deserving their two goal lead at half-time.
Duah scoring on 12 minutes, coolly finishing past Gulacsi when the ball was slipped through to him. The linesman’s flag shot up but VAR swiftly dealt with it, showing clearly that the striker was onside.
Fabian Schar looking very comfortable as the right sided defender of a backline of three, playing some trademark passes forward and one run took him all the way into the penalty area before his shot was blocked.
Switzerland finally got the second goal their first half dominance deserved, Aebischer with a great finish into the bottom corner from a curled shot struck outside the penalty area, just ahead of the break.
Hungary to their credit came out and gave it a go in the second half, finding themselves back in the game when Szoboszlai’s very good cross found Varga stooping to head home at the far post.
The game becoming very open at this point as Switzerland went for the killer third goal and Hungary desperate for the equaliser.
On 73 minutes Fabian Schar coming very close to deliver a third for the Swiss, heading a corner narrowly wide.
Switzerland finishing the stronger, as Hungary struggled to create, although the Newcastle defender came up with a smart bit of defending with a couple of minutes remaining, to snuff out a threat inside the box.
The Swiss getting closer and closer to the goal that would let them breathe a bit easier and it finally came in added time, poor defending let Embolo in and he calmly lobbed the keeper to ensure the win.
The second game in Group A after Germany tore Scotland apart, Clarke’s team lucky to get away with a 5-1 defeat on Friday night.
Fabian Schar and Switzerland now face Scotland on Wednesday (8pm) and a win would guarantee progress for the Swiss. Switzerland and Germany looking massive favourites to fill the top two spots.
The other matches playing today are Spain v Croatia at 5pm and Italy v Albania 8pm on Saturday night.
Where Newcastle United are concerned, after Fabian Schar today, on Sunday night at 8pm we could see Kieran Trippier and/or Anthony Gordon play against Serbia, with the Serbs having our old mate Mitro up front.
Then on Monday, Martin Dubravka and Slovakia take on Belgium at 5pm.
The Copa America is the kind of equivalent of the European Championships and we have to wait until Monday 24 June for likely Newcastle United involvement, as Bruno Guimaraes and Brazil take on Costa Rica, whilst Miguel Almiron and Paraguay face Colombia.
