FC Barcelona made a very risky proposal to Frenkie de Jong

In 2019, when Josep Maria Bartomeu’s FC Barcelona managed to steal Frenkie de Jong from under the nose of Paris Saint-Germain, all of Catalonia cried out for genius and many saw it as revenge after the Trafalgar coup carried out by the Parisians with Neymar in 2017. Five years later, Frenkie de Jong is more of a problem to manage for Barça than a source of satisfaction.

On the pitch, the Batavian is one of Xavi’s leaders, even if he has often shown irregularity since playing in Catalonia. Behind the scenes, it is clearly his contract (which runs until 2026, editor’s note) which poses a problem for a club still struggling financially. At a time when rumors suggest that De Jong wants to pack up, Barça would like to extend the lease of its number 21 until 2029 according to Jijantes. But not under current conditions.

Barça wants to lower the salary of its star

As a reminder, when De Jong signed with the Blaugranas in 2019, he signed an evolving contract (excluding bonuses) in which his emoluments increase each season, except for the last two years. A lease which now allows him to earn €24.8 million per year, still without bonuses. Next year, it will increase to €23.3 million and will be paid up to €23 million in 2025/2026.

You will have understood, FC Barcelona would like Frenkie de Jong to lower his emoluments if he really wants to stay for the long term. A game that can be risky. The media confirms that the Dutchman is indeed willing to listen to offers from other clubs, but it should also be remembered that Barça had fought for many months to obtain several stars of the time (Pique, Busquets, Alba) a discount as the club was coming out of a very difficult COVID period. Disappointed with the club’s current situation, will De Jong be sensitive to such an offer?
