Manchester United fans taking an interest in Cape Verde’s Africa Cup of Nations heroics have been given a surprise throwback.

The competition's 14th-highest ranked side took on four-time winners Ghana in their opener in the Ivory Coast and left with a surprise 2-1 win.

The result makes things very interesting in Group D, with Egypt and Mozambique drawing earlier on, the two favourites to qualify for the knockouts both failed to win.

Ghana has a whole host of huge names, including Jordan and Andre Ayew as well as Athletic Bilbao superstar Inaki Williams.

That’s a stark contrast to Cape Verde, except for one recognisable face.

Starting up front for the island nation was Bebe, who’s most famous worldwide for his failed stint at Manchester United.

The striker, whose real name is Tiago Manuel Dias Correia, didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet during the win, but was seen celebrating with his teammates after, dancing to music on his way out of the dressing room.

Now aged 33, Bebe joined United in 2010 from Vitoria Guimaraes in a £7million deal, and was barely seen, making seven appearances before heading off.

Since then, though, the forward has found his groove.

He headed back to Portugal with various different teams but he’s since settled at Madrid side Rayo Vallecano and become a fan favourite.

Helping Rayo return to LaLiga in 2021, the team are now first league regulars, and have Bebe to thank.

His impact has dwindled over the past two seasons, but that shouldn’t be the case for Cape Verde, meaning United fans may get more reminders about one of their most bizarre transfers.
