Former Barcelona Atletic coach effusive in praise of breakthrough youngster – ‘Total leader’

In an exclusive interview with Que T’hi Jugues (h/t Mundo Deportivo), former Barcelona Atletic coach Rafa Marquez shared his insights on Marc Casado’s remarkable rise to becoming a regular starter under Hansi Flick in the first-team setup this season.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who was the Barça Atletic captain under Marquez last season, has established himself in the elite ranks this term, even earning his first call-up to the Spanish national team this month.

Speaking about his former player’s character, Marquez was effusive in his praise, as he said: “Casado is a total leader in his desire to succeed, who has earned his place through his work.”

The current Mexican national team assistant coach particularly highlighted both Casado’s progression and Flick’s bold commitment to the young talent, saying:

“Casado is very competitive, and Flick, from the first moment he saw him, decided to keep him. We must credit him for that decision and having the courage to give these young players a role.”

“The differentiating factor is actually playing them – that’s the Barcelona method. Having someone in the final stage of youth development who trusts in young players and gives them opportunities,” he added.

Reflecting on Casado’s impact at Barça Atletic, Marquez was unequivocal in his praise, as he said:

“With Casado, Barça Atletic was one team, and without him, it was another. He was very important both on and off the pitch.”

The former coach drew personal parallels with his former protege, saying:

“Casado reminded me of myself in attitude, character, and desire to improve every day, giving maximum effort in every match and training session, with a very competitive winning mentality.”

Regarding areas for improvement for Casado, Marquez observed: “He’s very young and has things to improve upon. His confidence level allows him to attempt things we hadn’t seen before.

“He has so much enthusiasm that he wants to cover a lot of space – he’s very dynamic and sometimes moves out of position, wanting to be everywhere. Sometimes he needs to be more positional; he’s gradually understanding this.”

During the interview, Marquez also talked about some other young talents at Barcelona, as he expressed sympathy for Marc Bernal’s ACL injury blow, saying:

“It’s a shame about Bernal. He was also developing quite well, with good performances, showing quality and growth. I hope he recovers soon.”

The former defender joined the chorus of voices amazed by Lamine Yamal’s impact, hailing the 17-year-old wonderkid as he said:

“Lamine is a phenomenon, there’s not much more to say: he proves it match after match. At his age, he shows us he’s already an idol and a reference point. I hope we have him for a long time.”
