With reports emerging earlier today that Barcelona are internally debating the future of second-choice goalkeeper Inaki Pena, there could be a possibility that they enter the market for a replacement in the summer if the academy graduate is sold.

The 24-year-old started off well during Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s absence earlier this season, but as time progressed, his performances declined and the team began to leak goals, although the leaky backline did not help matters.

Either way, his continuity is now being discussed within the club offices, with the idea of signing a more experienced player as backup being floated.

David de Gea on Barcelona’s agenda

As such, Mundo Deportivo reports that former Manchester United goalkeeper and icon David de Gea happens to be on the agenda of Barcelona.

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent, having not signed for any club after being released by Manchester United in the summer of last year.

The report suggests that there is no information directly from the club that the Spaniard is a target, but it is believed that the veteran shot-stopper happens to be on the agenda, thanks to his proven quality and free agency.

But it is an altogether different matter as to whether De Gea would be willing to act as a backup to Ter Stegen should he join Barcelona in the summer.

Apart from the Manchester United icon, the reigning La Liga champions are also looking at Luis Maximiano, who is currently on loan at UD Almeria from Italian giants Lazio.
