Kylian Mbappe has once again become the talking point of European football, as the forward finally looks to make a decision on his future.
The Frenchman’s current deal at PSG expires at the end of the season, with Real Madrid ready to snap him up on a free transfer.
Had it not been for certain reasons, Real Madrid would have easily faced stiff competition from Barcelona in the race to sign Mbappe this summer.
To that end, a recent report from Diario SPORT has highlighted four reasons why Barcelona are not in a position to compete with Real Madrid for Mbappe.
Mbappe’s signing bonus
Even though Mbappe will become a free agent in the summer, the player is demanding a hefty €130 million signing bonus.
This is way beyond Barcelona’s economic capacity at the moment. The club were struggling to even together €20 million for a midfielder in January. Spending such a fortune on Mbappe, therefore, was always going to be far-fetched.
Barcelona’s economic issues
Other than not being able to conjure up Mbappe’s €130 million, Barcelona have a host of other economic problems to deal with.
The club’s current salary structure does not permit the inclusion of a footballing superstar such as Mbappe, whose salary would at least be triple that of the highest-paid Barcelona player right now.

FFP regulations
Even if Barcelona were to sustain Mbappe’s wages, the club cannot register the Frenchman in the first place due to Financial Fair Play regulations.
Due to the club’s inflated wage budget, FFP laws will not allow Barcelona to pay €30 million to Mbappe every season. The squad would thus require major restructure just to accommodate Mbappe’s higher salary.
Mbappe on the verge of joining Real Madrid
Last but not least, it is Mbappe himself, who has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid. After knocking on the door at Santiago Bernabeu for two consecutive years, the Frenchman now has the chance to complete the move this summer.
Everything suggests that Mbappe has already decided to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. Barcelona, therefore, are not in a position to go after the Frenchman.
