Barcelona missed out on the opportunity to secure the first trophy of 2024, as they slumped to a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, in the final of the Spanish Super Cup.

It was an embarrassing result for the Catalans, who have become quite susceptible to losing to their arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Speaking after the game, veteran midfielder Sergi Roberto highlighted the disappointment of the result, stating (h/t Mundo Deportivo), “Losing to Real Madrid is always painful. I’m very angry.”

The midfielder pointed out that Barcelona should have started the game well, rather than conceding two goals from Vinicius in quick successions.

“The two goals in 10 minutes have hurt us a lot. After the penalty, we tried. We’re screwed, but we have to go on,” he said. “I wish I could explain what happened to us at the beginning of the match. When we scored the 2-1, it felt like we were in the match.”

Another Barcelona star, Frenkie de Jong, was also disappointed with the result, especially after coming on the back of four successive wins in all competitions.

“We have not come at a bad moment, because we had just won four games in a row. I think that is not a bad moment, but today they have been better, superior and have deserved to win,” the Dutchman said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

Adding on, De Jong stated that Barcelona must buckle up and fare well in the coming matches. “We have to recover, get up and, above all, improve a lot,” he added.

Sergi Roberto, too, echoed a similar sentiment while backing Barcelona to do well in the remaining competitions.

“On Thursday we have to think about another competition. We have to learn from our mistakes,” the veteran said. “We’ll definitely get out of this. I still trust this team 100%.”

Up next, Barcelona are slated to take on Unionistas this midweek, in the Round of 16 stage of the Copa Del Rey.
