Former Nigerian international, Dimeji Lawal has urged Nigerians not to judge Finidi George based on the results of the two international friendly games the Super Eagles will play against Ghana and Mali.

Recall that on Tuesday, Finidi was appointed the interim coach for the senior national team after the departure of Jose Peseiro. Finidi who scored 6 goals in 62 appearances in his 31-year international career will lead the Super Eagles in their friendly matches against rivals, the Black Stars of Ghana and the Eagles of Mali.

However, in an interview with Completesports.com, Lawal stated that the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner is capable of handling the Super Eagles if given the opportunity.

“You don’t judge coaches based on friendly matches because he will have to try new ideas, introduce tactics, and presence to the players. And that will definitely take time. It won’t just happen within few days. So it won’t be fair to judge him with the games against Ghana and Mali. It will be too dangerous.

“I think what the NFF should do is to give him a tournament with a team built and let’s see what he can do.

“I sincerely believe Finidi is capable considering the fact that he has been there for sometime. He has also proven himself with Enyimba in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). I just think we should give him the support.”

The 52-year-old becomes the fifth player from the 1994 AFCON winning squad to coach the Super Eagles after, late Stephen Keshi, Samson Siasia, Sunday Oliseh and Austin Eguavoen.
