This is crunch time for Gareth Southgate and England.

As he prepares to play at St James’ Park with Bosnia & Herzegovina the opponents, closing a two decades gap since the last time the national (men’s) side played on Tyneside.

Every chance Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier will get on the pitch and with the friendly sold out, hopefully a decent atmosphere.

Gareth Southgate saying (see below) that he is really looking forward to the match.

The England boss is often seen at St James’ Park watching Newcastle United matches but a first for him in taking charge of the national side on Tyneside.

Gareth Southgate will have reduced numbers available on Monday night, as those players who have featured in the FA Cup or Champions League finals, have been given extra rest.

So for the England boss it will be a case of watching how England get on this Monday night at St James’ Park, as well as assessing those players from Man City, Man U and Real Madrid who won’t be involved, then announce his final 26 man squad for Germany in the week. As the very final deadline for naming the national squads is on Friday 7 June, when England play on the night against Iceland at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate speaking to the England YouTube channel in advance of the game at St James’ Park on Monday night:

“Bringing the team on the road is something we enjoy doing.

“To play at Wembley for your country is very special, so you never want to lose that aspect, but we have got a nice contrast this week of doing both things.

“We are England.

“We represent everybody.

“I played in the north east and I know how passionate people here are about their football and Newcastle United with the last couple of seasons they have had and the momentum behind them…

“But there will be a lot of Sunderland fans up there and Middlesbrough fans [at St James’ Park].

“It will be a brilliant night.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”
