EXCLUSIVE: Fantasy icon George R.R. Martin, billionaire entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine and animation veteran Conrad Vernon (The Addams Family) are advisory board members and stakeholders in new LA-based animation company Bizaar Studios, which is launching today.
The outfit has been set up by Iovine’s son, Jeremy Iovine, and Amir Mohamadzadeh, who together previously founded creative agency Rosewood Creative, and film and TV exec Eric Bromberg who will serve as co-founder and President.
Rosewood’s work has included short films, animations, and marketing campaigns with Dr. Dre, Bono, Snoop Dogg, Spike Lee and LeBron James. Bromberg previously worked at Exile Content Studios and Gunpowder & Sky. He helped drive horror and sci-fi labels Alter and Dust.
The ambitious company is oriented towards adult animation and aims to include development, marketing and distribution of original films and TV series. It will create content in house and acquire third-party material. First projects are due to be revealed soon and additional hires will be made though the scale is to remain streamlined.
The initial slate is said to be largely genre-oriented (“horror, comedy and anime-adjacent”) but is due to expand to all genres. The founders say they have already partnered with dozens of independent animators on projects, including Nate Milton, Ruby Taylor, Vewn, Mr. Friend, and David Romero, with those collaborations already racking up interest on Bizaar Studios’ nascent Instagram.
The founders tell us they will release content via existing social channels but hope to launch their own streaming platform down the line. Content will be available “via YouTube, IG and TikTok and then via a FAST channel and eventually with originals on both FAST and SVOD. We have plans to eventually launch an O&O channel offering native and innovative global distribution.”
“Great can come from anywhere,” said co-founder Jeremy Iovine. “It’s our goal to find and partner with creators pushing the art form forward to tell stories that will redefine what people have come to expect from adult animation.”
“Bizaar is the destination for mind-bending adult animation,” said Amir Mohamadzadeh. “We’re building a sanctuary for indie creators and Hollywood veterans alike – to collaborate, experiment, innovate, and tell stories that challenge conventions.”
Fantasy novelist Martin is best known as the creative source for HBO’s blockbuster Game Of Thrones series. Iovine is the former record company exec turned entrepreneur who founded Beats with Dr Dre. Animation vet Vernon has worked on a string of animation hits from Shrek to Madagascar 3. He directed Sony Pictures’ Sausage Party and co-directed MGM’s animated The Addams Family movies.
