Barcelona’s economic troubles appear to have no end in sight. Despite securing a deal to sign Dani Olmo this summer, the club are still not in a position to register the Spanish international.

There were hopes Ilkay Gundogan’s shocking last-minute exit could help the club significantly free up the wage bill, thus allowing them to finally register Dani Olmo.

However, a recent report from COPE has given a very contradictory claim, suggesting Barcelona are still far away when it comes to registering Olmo.

Gundogan exit unlikely to be enough

As per the report, Barcelona will not be in a position to register Olmo even after the departure of Gundogan, who is set for an imminent return to Manchester City.

This is because Barcelona still have an inflated wage bill, filled with players operating with high salaries.

The likes of Clement Lenglet, Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha fall in that bracket. Barcelona are desperately trying to seal exits for Lenglet and Vitor Roque in this final stretch of the transfer window.

The report does indicate that Barça could be able to register OImo if they manage to offload at least another star player.

Lenglet and Roque are likely to be the two candidates leaving Barcelona, though Andreas Christensen has also emerged as a potential candidate lately, amid interest from the Premier League.

What is Barcelona’s other option?

Player sales are not the only source of income for Barcelona. The club can opt to bring in revenue through sponsorship deals.

The Catalans are in talks with Nike over a brand-new deal for a long time now, but the two parties are still in the negotiation phase.

Should they reach an agreement and officiate the new deal, Barcelona should have enough income to not only register Olmo but also go after a new player.
