Barcelona officially severed ways with Xavi Hernandez earlier today, with the manager set to hit the exit door after a two-and-a-half-year stint at his boyhood club.
Although the Catalan giants have not released an official statement yet, it is only a matter of time before Hansi Flick takes over the helm to steady the ship.
Former Germany legend approves of the move
Now, former player and coach Lothar Matthäus has come out to give his two cents on the imminent arrival of Hansi Flick.
He expressed his approval of Barcelona’s decision to hire Hansi Flick in a statement to BILD (h/t MARCA).
“Hansi’s style suits Barcelona,” the 1990 Ballon d’Or winner professed.
Matthäus added that Barcelona can rediscover their former glory with the appointment of Flick, who is accustomed to preaching an expansive and offensive style of play.
“With Pep Guardiola, Barcelona was a spectacle and they played great football. With Hansi they can recover that magic,” he claimed.
“He wants his teams to act in an offensive and attractive way,” Matthäus affirmed.
Flick’s tenure at Bayern Munich was immensely successful, as he not only played an aggressive brand of football but also won several trophies. As such, the Blaugrana faithful have every right to believe Matthäus’ sentiments.
Moreover, the 63-year-old professed that reuniting with former players Ilkay Gundogan, Robert Lewandowski, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen will prove to be a huge plus point.
“With Ter Stegen, Ilkay Gündogan, Robert Lewandowski immediately has three references, which is important,” Matthäus argued.
When could Flick be presented?
It is anticipated that Flick’s arrival will be made public after Barcelona’s last game of the season against Sevilla is concluded.
As for an official presentation, reports have mentioned that the initial plan is to present Flick on Thursday or Friday next week.
