Manchester United fans are currently eagerly anticipating which new arrival will be first through the doors at Carrington.

As it stands, it’s tied between either Joshua Zirzee or Matthijs de Ligt as to whose deal will get over the line quicker, although both may face some delay given their international commitments at Euro 2024.

The Netherlands take on England in Wednesday evening’s semi-final, but neither of the United-linked Dutchmen have made a start under Ronald Koeman yet. Zirkzee has made just one three-minute cameo in the quarter-final victory over Turkey, while De Ligt has been an unused substitute in all five matches played.

He also featured sporadically at Bayern Munich last season, vying for a starting role with the likes of Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae and, after the January transfer window, Eric Dier. As a result, the 24-year-old made only 16 Bundesliga starts and five in the Champions League.

PL legend shares verdict on De Ligt speculation

At Old Trafford, you’d expect that De Ligt would be a mainstay in the starting 11 alongside Lisandro Martinez, with him being identified as a direct replacement for experienced counterpart Raphael Varane.

Alan Shearer isn’t fazed by the former Ajax captain’s lack of game time, either. He told Betfair (cited by The Mirror) this week: “Matthijs de Ligt has been linked with a move to Old Trafford and I think he would be a good signing for Man United. He’s a really good player – really solid.

“I know he can’t get in the Dutch team, but he’d be a really good addition for Man United. I like him a lot and I think his style of play would suit the Premier League.”
