After weeks of speculation, FC Barcelona have finally taken the call on Xavi Hernandez’s future and it appears the Spaniard is all set to leave the club at the end of the season.

This significant development was a surprise to many, especially considering the fact that the board confirmed the continuity of Xavi in a press conference just a few weeks ago.

Shortly after Xavi’s sacking, Sevilla coach Quique Sanchez Flores fired shots at Barcelona for treating their legends poorly.

Now, former Barça and current Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, too, has reacted to the news.

The Catalan offered his condolences to Xavi and expressed his surprise over the decision. He even called the decision quite unfortunate.

“Well, what can I say? It’s never good news because something clearly didn’t work out. But the reasons for why it happened, I don’t know, so I can’t give my opinion,” Guardiola said (h/t El Chiringuito).

“When I go to Barcelona and talk to some people there, maybe I will know, but now I don’t know,” he added.

Guardiola’s comments came against the backdrop of Manchester City’s much-awaited FA Cup final against cross-town rivals Manchester United tomorrow.

Guardiola, therefore, did not have much to share in regards to Barcelona’s decision to sack Xavi.

What’s next for Barça?

Barcelona have been working on Xavi’s departure for quite some time now, which is why the club have already lined up a few replacement options.

Hansi Flick appears to be the most likely candidate to replace Xavi next season. In fact, the German could merely be days away from being presented as the next coach of FC Barcelona.

Having prepped for his job for a while now, the onus will be on Flick to lead the Barcelona project forward and restore the club’s lost glory.
