James Gunn admitted that only one key part of Peacemaker is no longer canon.
The mind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was brought in to head the DC Extended Universe project in October 2022. He is rebooting the entire cinematic universe and crafting one similar to what Kevin Feige did with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While most of the projects already created were torn up and reset, one remained canon in the cinematic universe. That was John Cena’s Peacemaker, where the WWE legend played the loud-mouthed hero during a turbulent time for DC.
The series quickly became a fan-favorite one. Fans and critics praised John Cena’s performance and the series was one of the best things to come out of the DCEU. A second series is on the way. However, how it fits in with the DCEU is something James Gunn has been discussing.
James Gunn sets the record straight
James Gunn recently spoke with IGN about how Peacemaker fits into his vision. He revealed that nearly all of the first season of the show remains canon, except for one scene. This was the end of the final episode of series one. Zack Snyder’s Justice League appeared and John Cena’s character cussed them out, especially Aquaman.
This part of the series no longer canon after James Gunn’s changes. He told IGN;
“The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”
Gunn said that almost anything else that came before the upcoming Creature Commandos series is out.
“Now in Creature Commandos, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in [The] Suicide Squad or Peacemaker,” Gunn explained. “Well then, those things automatically become canon.”
