Barcelona climbed up to the second position in the La Liga standings after recording a resounding 4-0 victory over Getafe in Montjuic earlier today.
Raphinha, back in the starting XI, opened the scoring in the first half and should have had at least one more goal.
Joao Felix, back from injury, made it 2-0 early in the second period before Frenkie de Jong also found the back of the net. Fermin Lopez added more sheen to the scoreline and made it 4-0 in stoppage time.
The result meant that Barcelona went past Girona and took over the second place in the table, although Michel’s men have a game in hand.
Joao Felix happy after scoring
It was earlier this week, during the Napoli clash, that Joao Felix made his return from injury. And the Portuguese forward was reinstated to the starting XI today against Getafe and made the most of it, bagging a goal.
Speaking to the media after the game, the 24-year-old on-loan forward said (h/t Mundo Deportivo): “We had a plan and we executed it. Everything went well.”
“We deserved the win, we did things well, as in other games, but in football, you have to have a bit of luck and fortunately today it was also with us to win 4-0.”
“it was key not to start losing, to start winning is fundamental because it’s not easy to come back from behind. And when we do that, we gain confidence,” he further added.
Discussing his return to fitness, the Portuguese ace admitted that he did everything possible to come back soon and help the team out, saying:
“I’m doing my job, I’m trying to give my best, I’ve done my best to come back early from injury. I try to enjoy myself, like the whole team, I think we’ve been a happy and confident team.”
Regarding the competition for starting places, he said: “We are at Barça, everyone is good and has the quality to play, competition is good for us and for the team.”
On the La Liga title race, the 24-year-old ace remarked: “We will fight for La Liga until the very end. We put pressure on Girona and Madrid, which is always good.”
Frenkie de Jong believes he can do better
Another of today’s goalscorers, Frenkie de Jong, also interacted with the media and expressed his happiness at the victory, saying: “I’m very happy. If you win 4-0 you feel very comfortable.”
Discussing how Barça got the better of Getafe on the day, the Dutchman added: “They tried to press high up the pitch, so they left a lot of space in behind. We created a lot of chances.”
At the same time, though, the 26-year-old claimed that he was not entirely pleased with his display and is capable of doing better.
“Today was not my best day. I missed passes, but we won, so it’s fine. I will continue to train. I think that with the ball, it was one of my worst games of the season… but people think you play well because you score goals,” he remarked.
De Jong’s strike also happened to be a milestone for FC Barcelona for it was the 11000th goal in the history of the club.
“They told me after the match that I scored the club’s 11000th goal. I’m happy to score a historic goal,” he remarked.
Signing off, the Dutchman had this to say on the title race: “We have to keep winning matches and look at how we’re doing in the table.”
