John Cena was the face of WWE from 2006 to 2016, as he essentially carried the company on his back throughout the PC era in WWE. He wasn’t really known for producing incredible matches and Cena has now disclosed a unique perspective on wrestling star ratings.
During a recent appearance on 92NY, a culture and arts channel about New York City, John Cena found himself addressing a question unrelated to WWE. The question focused on his 4.5 star match against AJ Styles, and whether he harbored any aspirations to attempt a 5-star match in the future.
John Cena responded by stating that during his WWE career, he didn’t pay much attention to star ratings, despite recognizing their value for performers. His focus remained on his personal approach to wrestling rather than external evaluations.
“So how do I put this… I am much more concerned when I perform for WWE in how the audience as a whole feels about my performance rather than one individual trying to grade me in a level of stars.“
“Not that it doesn’t matter, because that is a great way for those to try and get equity and try to get noticed.“
“It’s a great ranking system and I do appreciate it. I’m not knocking critics. I’m just saying my process is to make sure that everyone who paid a ticket had a great night. “
“And if that gets me a zero star match, I still know in my heart of hearts that I entertained my audience that night.”
Throughout his extensive WWE career, John Cena received a 5-star match rating from Dave Meltzer for his loss to CM Punk at Money in the Bank on July 17, 2011. Nevertheless, fans are hoping John Cena will appear at WrestleMania 40 after he confirmed his status for the event, so we’ll have to see if he will appear at the show somehow.
