A source, said to be a close friend of the Portuguese coach, told Mail Online: “His ambition is to return to United.

“He feels like he has unfinished business there after how it ended last time and he had made it his mission to go back.”

Mourinho coached the Red Devils from 2016 to 2018, winning the Europa League and League Cup in his first season before finishing second in the Premier League the following year. He was sacked in December 2018, halfway into his third season at the club.

A legend at Chelsea, he then shocked English football even further by landing at Tottenham, but left after 17 uninspiring and COVID-impacted months.

Somewhat repairing his reputation with a Europa Conference League win at Roma, things ended prematurely again this season.

Mourinho has since been spotted at Barcelona airport, starting rumours over a move to the club where he started his career.

Reports also claimed Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab moved for the 61-year-old, while there were strong links to Napoli.

However, Mourinho may see a return to England as his best option, having recently revealed his children are still living in London.

Also linked with Newcastle, Mourinho may be eyeing a vacancy at Old Trafford should the Manchester giants call time on Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman, who had a successful debut season last time out, is currently struggling in his sophomore campaign, already out of the Champions League and League Cup, and ninth in the Premier League.

Jim Ratcliffe recently purchased 25 per cent of the club, and has agreed to take control of footballing matters, which could see him make a change in the dugout.

Whether Mourinho still has any credit in the bank remains to be seen, with talkSPORT host Gabby Agbonlahor simply commenting: “There’s more chance of Jurgen Klopp taking over at Manchester United.”
