The Democratic Party is in a state of panic over the 2024 general election following a disastrous debate performance by Joe Biden, reports Daily Mail.

The 81-year-old president’s faltering and mumbling display against Donald Trump on Thursday night has led to calls for his replacement on the ticket.

Biden’s voice was hoarse from the start, and he repeatedly cleared his throat during the 90-minute primetime debate on CNN. His performance continued to decline as he lost his train of thought and stumbled over his words multiple times. At several points, he stared blankly into the camera or down at his notes while Trump was speaking.

David Axelrod, former Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama, acknowledged the negative impact of Biden’s debate performance, which has sent shockwaves through the liberal community. “I think there was a sense of shock actually how he came out at the beginning of the debate, how his voice sounded, he seemed a little disoriented,” Axelrod said on CNN, suggesting that the party might reconsider Biden’s run for reelection.

Biden’s performance raised concerns about his age and capability to serve another term. He struggled to complete sentences or articulate his points, often cutting his answers short. CNN moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash had to remind him to use his allotted time when responding to Trump.

Kate Bedingfeld, former White House communications director for Biden, also criticized his performance. “It was a really disappointing debate performance from Joe Biden,” she said. “I don’t think there is any other way to slice it.”

Activist and CNN commentator Van Jones expressed his disappointment, despite his affection for Biden. “There are people who are going to want to see him consider taking a different course now,” Jones said. “We’re still far from our convention and there is time for this party to figure out a different way forward if he will allow us to do that but that was not what we needed from Joe Biden.”

Other Democratic strategists echoed these concerns. MSNBC contributor and Democratic strategist Max Burns commented on social media, “I don’t know if high-level conversations are happening right now about Biden’s concerning performance, but it would be political malpractice to pretend tonight advanced the Biden campaign.”

Democrats have been anonymously expressing their shock and dismay to reporters. New York Times reporter Kenneth Vogel quoted a prominent Democrat texting, “Gavin please…” CNN host Kasie Hunt shared on social media that Democrats were “nearly beside themselves watching this debate” after witnessing Biden’s demeanor. She reported texts from prominent Democrats, including one saying, “If I was Gavin (Newsom) or Gretchen (Whitmer), I’d be making calls tonight,” and another bluntly stating, “we are f***d.”

Many Democrats are now urging the party to confront the reality of their situation and reassess their chances for the upcoming election.
