Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general elections, Peter Obi, has extended his condolences to the families affected by the tragic building collapse in a market in Onitsha on Monday night.
In a press statement released by his media adviser, Mr. Valentine Obineme, Obi expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and urged the public to prioritize adherence to engineering and building standards for the safety of all.
Regarding the incident at Ochanja Market in Onitsha where a block of shops collapsed, resulting in the loss of about six lives and the rescue of over 20 individuals, Obi stated, “I firmly believe that building collapses will be a thing of the past if we adhere to standards and procedures. Only trained, licensed, and professional personnel should handle building projects, and materials must meet project specifications.”
He empathized with the victims, highlighting that they were individuals striving to make a living.
Additionally, Obi expressed gratitude to those involved in the rescue efforts and urged the state government to conduct a thorough investigation into the root cause of the collapse.
