Kenny Omega reflects on helping build AEW.
Omega was sidelined for over a year due to diverticulitis. The AEW EVP returned to the ring at NJPW x AEW Wrestle Dynasty. There, he defeated Gabe Kidd.
In his backstage comments following NJPW x AEW Wrestle Dynasty, Kenny Omega was asked to comment on how he felt after the match.
“I’m conflicted,” Omega said. “Listen, I passed my peak a long time ago. It’s funny, it was 2012. I was in the main event, and I thought, boy, I’ve come so far. I’ve done more than I ever thought I could have. It’s time to give everything, and I would feel proud to die in this ring. I wasn’t even close to my peak. And then I won the G1, and I thought that was my peak. Then I won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, and I thought that was my peak. I had a hand in creating a true alternative of pro wrestling, and so many people have changed their lives for the better. It was a very thankless position. So many people living their dream lives. Not once did I get a thank you. Nor did I expect one. I thought that was my peak.
“Today, I sat in my hotel room before the show, and a part of me, in a moment of weakness, was truly hoping for someone to reach out and ask, ‘Kenny, how are you doing? Kenny, good luck.’ Never came. Except for one person. And boy, would it have been nice to have that person in my corner today. But it’s funny. You never get what you truly want in wrestling. So I had to face this battle alone. I accepted it. That’s just the business that this is. Now, you have a new hero here in Japan. Gabe, he’s young, he’s hungry, he’s passionate, and he has no qualms about doing everything it takes until he gets what he wants. That’s the kind of person New Japan needs now. Enjoy it.”
Kenny Omega is set to appear on the January 8th episode of AEW Dynamite.
