According to a report by Roger Torello in Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could potentially face the departure of another key player, Andreas Christensen, alongside Ilkay Gundogan this summer.

The Danish defender is reportedly open to leaving the club if a suitable offer is made, which has raised some concerns among fans.

It is no secret that Barcelona’s primary focus in the current transfer window has been on managing the departures of players like Vitor Roque, Mika Faye, and Clement Lenglet.

However, as the transfer window draws to a close, it appears that Christensen’s exit cannot be ruled out entirely

Christensen is crucial, but there is interest

Despite being a crucial part of the squad, the versatile defender has attracted interest from several clubs, including Premier League side Newcastle United. Christensen previously played in England with Chelsea, making Newcastle a familiar destination for him.

In Barcelona’s recent league opener against Valencia at Mestalla, Christensen was left on the bench, as manager Hansi Flick opted for Inigo Martinez as the left-footed centre-back and  Marc Casado as the pivot.

This decision has sparked speculation about Christensen’s role this season, suggesting it may not be as significant as it has been in previous years. The uncertainty surrounding his position in the team could be a factor pushing him towards the exit.

Crucial for FFP

It must be noted that Christensen joined Barcelona on a free transfer in 2022. Although he did not come with a transfer fee, players who arrive on free transfers often receive a signing bonus, which is distributed across their contract period.

His departure could provide Barcelona with some much-needed relief in terms of financial fair play, as the club continues to navigate its challenging economic situation.

With two years remaining on his contract, Christensen is reportedly willing to consider leaving, provided the offer meets both his financial and sporting expectations.
