Kieran Trippier has been speaking ahead of England’s opening Euros match against Serbia, the first group game at 8pm on Sunday.
The Newcastle United star expected to start at left-back, bringing some much needed experience and leadership to what could be a fairly young side.
With thankfully Gareth Southgate finally ditching players who had clung on despite fading form and in certain cases playing pretty much no club football, this England squad has a very different look.
Of the 26 selected by Southgate, 12 of the England players are at a major international tournament for the very first time, including Anthony Gordon.
However, Kieran Trippier says that despite their youth and/or inexperience, many of the younger players are showing leadership qualities and are very vocal on the training pitch. Difficult to believe Anthony Gordon is shy, if he has something to say!
With Newcastle United, we have seen up close just how good a leader Kieran Trippier is, with Jamaal Lascelles rarely playing, the England international regularly captaining NUFC.
Kieran Trippier talking to Radio 5 Live:
“I’ve been there [with England] for a long time now.
“So I came through the transition from when Joe Hart was here, Gary Cahill, the leaders of the group.
“You don’t have to be my age to be a leader.
“You can be 18, 19, 20, lead in different ways.
“It doesn’t have to just be the older players.
“But we understand that there are so many new faces here.
“So it is our responsibility, myself and the older players, to make all the younger players feel at ease.
“People forget how young Declan Rice is, for example, [but] he is very vocal.
“You have Bukayo Saka, who is so young and still very vocal.
“Even Cole Palmer.
“People might not see it but all the young players, they are vocal on the training pitch, which is really good to see.
“A lot of them have surprised me.
“I’m very happy for them and they have settled in very quickly.”
