A special night for Kieran Trippier.

Monday will see the Newcastle United star leading England out at St James’ Park.

The friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of two this week ahead of the European Championships.

England kick-off their first group game in Germany in 13 days time against Serbia, with the final warm up at Wembley on Friday against Iceland.

Gareth Southgate has already said that Anthony Gordon is one of a number of players that won’t be involved at St James’ Park tonight. The England boss saying on Sunday that he does though expect him to be ok to face Iceland on Friday, as the Newcastle star is looked after with an ankle issue picked up at Old Trafford, causing him to miss Newcastle’s final game of the season at Brentford.

As captain for tonight’s match, Kieran Trippier has been speaking to the media:

“Every single tournament, we want to win.

“We believe that we can do it [this time in Germany].

“We don’t mean that in an arrogant way.

“Hopefully it will be a good summer coming up.”

Kieran Trippier will walk out as England captain at St James’ Park and with him will be his son, one of the mascots:

“He has walked out at St James’ Park many times already, but to walk out with me leading the [England] team out, is something I will never forget.

“A very proud moment for myself.”

Kieran Trippier asked about his own circumstances, coming back from injury to feature in all three of Newcastle’s last three Premier League matches, before flying out to play against Tottenham in Melbourne as well, less than 72 hours after the Brentford match:

“It was no problem at all [going to Australia].

“We went there, we played the games, we came back, no injuries.

“Now I’m here with England and I’m ready to go for my country.”
