At least 13 people have allegedly been killed by suspected herdsmen who invaded a community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

During the attack, the herdsmen burned houses and looted properties.

A community source, requesting anonymity due to fear of reprisal, told reporters in Makurdi, “Yesterday, July 9, 2024, Fulani herdsmen attacked the Olegomachi community in Agatu LGA and killed 13 people.”

Phillip Ebenyakwu, the caretaker chairman of Agatu Council, confirmed the attack in a phone call with journalists. “Yes, it’s confirmed. There was an attack yesterday evening. The number I received was 10 people killed,” he said.

Ebenyakwu detailed that the assailants were armed with sophisticated weapons, looting, robbing, and burning houses, and ultimately killing residents. “About seven houses were burned down, and many properties, including animals like goats and chickens, were taken away,” he added.

The attack has been reported to the police, and the Department of State Services (DSS) is also aware. Ebenyakwu stated, “I’m working to ensure that security personnel visit the area. Arrangements are being made for their visit.”

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer SP Catherine Anene stated that she had not yet received the report from Agatu.
