Jahnu Baruaa, a jury member of the FFI, spoke out regarding Laapataa Ladies’ exit from the Oscars race. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, he stated, “That is very uncalled for. Why should people say such things? It is very unfortunate. People should try to accept it as the jury’s decision. I have had many of my films compete in various competitions, where some were awarded and others were not. That doesn’t mean I should have a negative opinion about the process… We should respect it.”
When questioned about mockery from Bollywood insiders toward the Film Federation of India, Jahnu remarked, “Well, they were not on the jury, that’s all.” While he refrained from commenting on why Laapataa Ladies didn’t advance. He emphasized that it was a democratic process that must be respected.
He further added, “The jury felt that the films which have gone to the Oscars in recent years lacked a sense of Indian-ness. A film needs to represent the nation. We believed that Laapataa Ladies encapsulated the right elements and showcased the social chaos we experience brilliantly.”
