The President-General of Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Chief Daniel Okoye, and the traditional ruler, Igwe Daniel Obelle, have condemned the Monday attack at the Agu-Isioye community axis of Enugu-Ukwu and Ifite Nawfia, which resulted in the killings of no fewer than four persons.

The killings occurred when some youths and indigenes of the Agu-Isioye community were invited to a land by some yet-to-be-identified armed hoodlums, on the pretenses that they were buying the said land, only to be rounded up by the armed assailants who opened fire on them, thereby killing four persons instantly in the process while others escaped with injuries.

This development generated several reactions with accusing fingers pointing at the people of the Nawfia community who were charged with allegedly committing the act.

Agu-Isioye where the Monday attack occurred is located on the boundary of Nawfia and Enugwu-Ukwu.

However, reacting to the development, the Nawfia community leaders, in a joint press statement on Tuesday, strongly condemned the attack on Agu-Isioye and the use of violence to settle disputes, describing the attack as an “abomination of the highest order”.

They insisted that Nawfia town values peace and dialogue and its people are law-abiding citizens who believe in due process.

The leaders criticised a resident (name withheld) of Enugwu-Ukwu, for making “hasty insinuations” that the perpetrators of the crime were from Nawfia, without waiting for a proper police investigation.

They described the insinuations as “inciteful, prejudicial, provocative, specious, and insensitive” to the sensibilities of Ndi Nawfia, aimed at raising tension for unknown purposes.

The statement read, “Our investigation did not suggest any involvement of Nawfia individuals in the violent episode.

“The unwholesome activities of land grabbers and speculators on the Agu Anaocha axis have been documented and brought to the attention of the Anambra State government for necessary action.”

The statement also commiserated with the families of the victims and wished those in the hospital a quick recovery.

The leaders prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in peace and urged that such an ugly incident would not recur.

The leaders called on law enforcement agents to swing into action and arrest the perpetrators and their sponsors to deter other criminally minded persons in the future.
