With Amad Diallo ruled out of injury for several weeks, Manchester United should give the nod to Patrick Dorgu in the final third.

While the Red Devils were preparing for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur, they received the news no one wanted to hear: Their most influential player in the attacking third has picked up an injury and will miss the action for weeks. Some went on to claim that the Ivorian’s season might already be over, including Fabrizio Romano who reveals the player is set to undergo surgery.

To make matters even worse for Ruben Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo has also stopped due to a knock, while his fellow midfielder Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer are seriously doubtful for the fixture due to fitness issues.

Hence, Man Utd’s depleted squad will force Amorim to go for a makeshift starting lineup, with Christian Eriksen joining Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee in the attacking trident, while Casemiro makes a compulsory return to the lineup, linking up with Bruno Fernandes in the double pivot.

Surprisingly, when it came to finding a replacement for Amad, Dorgu’s candidacy was never brought up. The 20-year-old Dane was considered one of the most exciting young left-backs in Serie A before making his £25 million move to Carrington towards the end of the January transfer session.

Ironically, Amorim deployed him as a right wingback last weekend against Leicester City, causing uproar amongst fans and pundits alike. That’s because most observers prefer to have field classic rather than inverted wingbacks who might struggle to cut a cross. Considering how paramount crossing is in a wingback’s game, the naysayers certainly had a point.

Nevertheless, the opposite is true when it comes to the attacking winger role, where the priority is cutting to the middle and perhaps aiming a shot at goal. And guess what? Dorgu has already excelled in this function during his time as an inverted right winger in Lecce’s 4-3-3 formation.

Contrary to popular belief, the Denmark international didn’t produce the majority of his goal contributions while playing in his original left-back role, but instead on the right wing where he proved to be equally devastating. This was the playing position that allowed the young man to display his exquisite shooting and dribbling abilities.

Thus, Amorim should consider preserving the status quo on the wingback roles (with Dalot and Mazraoui) and test Dorgu further up the field. It’s definitely worth a shot when your alternative is a waning, out-of-sorts midfielder who already has one foot outside the door.
