Manchester United have already signed a central defender and a striker this summer, but the focus will now shift towards recruiting a new left-back.

The Reds are believed to be stepping up their search for a left-back – with Tyrell Malacia no closer to returning to action, after missing out on a place in the pre-season tour squad.

According to The Mirror, United have three potential left-back targets. They include Feyenoord’s David Hancko and former Chelsea star Marcos Alonso, who is a free agent having left Barcelona at the end of the season.

The other target is believed to be Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell, who has one year left on his deal at Selhurst Park.

Alonso was thought to have been of interest to United last summer.

Malacia has not played for United in over 14 months, which says everything you need to know about whether we should rely on him for the coming season. He turns 25 next month and his last competition appearance was for the Netherlands against Croatia in the Nations League in June 2023.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw is on an extended break after Euro 2024, and he doesn’t go a full season without a sustained period out injured.

This means United have no recognised senior left-back going to the United States.

Academy product Harry Amass plays at left-back and is expected to get an opportunity to impress Ten Hag and his coaching staff on tour. Sam Murray is another after starting in the friendlies against Rosenborg and Rangers.

United made an 11th-hour move for a left-back in the summer transfer window last year after Shaw sustained a hamstring injury. United recruited Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham before ending the deal prematurely in January when Ten Hag thought he had Shaw returning to full fitness.

The club are already prepared to move for a right-back if they can see Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has travelled to the US as part of the squad for the tour. Noussair Mazraoui of Bayern Munich has been tipped as a potential replacement and he played under Ten Hag at Ajax.
