Manchester United made a late attempt to sign Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso on loan, according to reports in Paraguay.

The 21-year-old returned from a six-month absence last year due to a knee injury and has struggled to secure a regular role at Brighton.

So far this season, Enciso has started just two games in the Premier League and made another 10 appearances off the bench.

The Paraguay international, who initially moved to Brighton in a £9.5 million deal in 2022, has now agreed to join Ipswich Town on loan for the remainder of the season to help Kieran McKenna’s side in their battle to avoid relegation.

However, Paraguayan outlet Versus report that United made an approach to sign Enciso on loan.

The report claims that United viewed Enciso as a replacement for Alejandro Garnacho, who is wanted by Napoli and Chelsea.

However, Enciso turned down United’s approach as he believes he will secure more playing time at Ipswich.

United, meanwhile, held further talks with Napoli this week over a deal for Garnacho but the two clubs are still apart in their valuation of the Argentina international.

Garnacho’s asking price has been lowered to €65m (£54.9m), but Napoli are only willing to offer a deal worth up to €55m (£46.4m).

Napoli are now exploring alternative options to Garnacho and have opened talks with Borussia Dortmund over a deal for Karim Adeyemi.
