Matthew Perry‘s family is opening up ahead of the one-year anniversary of his death.
The Friends star passed away on October 28, 2023, drowning after a cardiac arrest in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home. His cause of death was listed as the acute effects of ketamine with drowning and coronary artery disease named as contributing factors. He was just 54.

In a sneak peek of an upcoming interview on Today released on Friday, Matthew’s mom Suzanne Morrison told Savannah Guthrie that she believes her son had a “premonition” about his passing shortly before it occurred. She recalled:
“He went through a period, interestingly enough, just before he died when he was showing me one of his new houses. He came up to me, and he said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now.’ It was almost as though it was a premonition or something.”
Like he knew he didn’t have long left? Damn. She didn’t realize the significance of the comment until later — but it still stood out as a rarely vulnerable chat between the family members at the time, she reflected:
“I didn’t think about it at the time, but I thought, ‘How long has it been since we’ve had a conversation like that? It’s been years.’”
Of course, as a mother, it also raised some alarm bells:
“I think there was something… there was an inevitability to what was going to happen next to him, and he felt it very strongly. But he said, ‘I’m not frightened anymore,’ and it worried me.”
Whoa.

The 17 Again star battled addiction for years. He had publicly come out as sober before his death, something he discussed as he promoted his 2022 book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. Unfortunately, it’s not clear how long that lasted — or how sober he really was. LA prosecutors believe he relapsed at some point and started “spiraling out of control” with his unsupervised use of ketamine. He had been taking it by prescription — it’s used to treat depression and pain — but on the day of his death he got it somewhere else. Several people, including his assistant and doctors, have been charged in connection to his death.
The family’s full segment on Today will air on Monday, the day of his death. It’ll also include Matthew’s stepfather Keith Morrison and other relatives. All his loved ones are in our thoughts as this difficult anniversary approaches.
