Mauritania coach Amir Abdou commented on the historic feat achieved by his team against Algeria on Tuesday.
By winning its match against Algeria with a score of 1-0 on Tuesday, Mauritania won its first victory in the history of the CAN. The decisive goal was scored by Mohamed Dellahi in the 37th minute. The Mauritanians then resisted the attacks of the Fennecs. This performance allows the Mourabitounes to qualify for the round of 16, a first in their history, which is a source of pride for their coach Amir Abdou.
“It’s extraordinary what we are experiencing. I told the players that they wrote the history of Mauritania. I am proud for Mauritania, its millions of inhabitants, who must be very happy, he indicated for Canal+ Sport Afrique. We achieved a victory against a very great football nation, we managed to win against this Algerian team which is far superior to us individually, but collectively the team showed a lot of desire, was very disciplined. Our victory is well deserved, we will enjoy it. »
A lesson in humility that the 51-year-old coach also wanted to pass on to these interlocutors. “Already, when you watch Canal+ yesterday, there is not a summary of us, not our composition. Of course it’s stimulating! When I saw that we weren’t thinking about Mauritania, we believed in it. Football is full of surprises.”

This victory is a real surprise and also a great reward for manager Amir Abdou, who had warned his future opponents before the match. “Tell Djamel Belmadi to prepare, we are not here to give points, we will do everything to ensure that Algeria is eliminated,” declared the Mauritanian technician. We are not here to distribute points against Algeria. We have time to recover. We are going to play the game to the fullest. Algeria is a great team that I respect. During my last CAN with the Comoros, we lost our first two matches and the last match against Ghana we played without pressure and we won by qualifying for the 1/8 finals with the best 3rds. »
