According to a fresh report from Sique Rodriguez on Carrussel Deportivo, Kylian Mbappe saw the possibility of signing for Barcelona when Neymar left back in 2017.
The Frenchman was still at AS Monaco at the time, and had already started attracting interest from all top European clubs, who were interested in signing him while still early in his career.
Mbappe had already started dreaming about a potential move to Real Madrid, but los blancos were not interested in a move for him at the time. They had Eden Hazard on their radar, with Vinicius Jr also arriving from Flamengo in the same summer.
Despite that, Mbappe was of the belief that he would have had more minutes at Barcelona and was already ready to take the next step in his career after an incredible season with Monaco, guiding them to the Champions League semi-finals.
Eventually, though, while they maintained their interest in Mbappe, Barcelona believed that Ousmane Dembele was a better fit for the club, and ended up signing him ‘out of necessity’, spending nearly €130 million on his signature.
Mbappe, meanwhile, moved to PSG in the same summer, who brought him on loan with the obligation to make his signing permanent the following year for a whopping €180 million.
Seven years down the line since, Mbappe is now on the move again, with none other than Madrid looking like his next destination in the summer. And his last season in the French capital has been with none other than Dembele, himself.
Had the move to Barcelona gone through in the summer of 2017, though, things could have been a lot different for both clubs.
Fans saw glimpses of his connection with Lionel Messi during their time at PSG, but the latter playing with the Frenchman at the peak of his powers back then could have drastically changed the timelines of both their careers.
