Kamala Harris, in her first appearance since Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed her, praised him as a commander in chief who in one term “has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who serve two terms in office.”

Speaking on the South Lawn against a backdrop of college-aged NCAA athletes, and before a crowd where few attendees were above the age of 30, Harris recalled that she first got to know Biden through is son Beau, when he was attorney general of Delaware and she was attorney general of California.

“Beau would often tell me stories about his dad. He would talk about the kind of man and the kind of father that Joe Biden is. The qualities that Beau revered in his father are the same qualities that I have seen every day in our president — his honesty, his integrity, his commitment to his faith and his family, his big heart and his deep love of our country.”

Harris remarks were at a ceremonial event to honor NCAA champions, but the contingent of reporters on hand to cover her brief remarks was far greater than is normal, more typical of the media throng that would show up to cover a major presidential announcement. Overheard: One reporter asking a colleague, “Do you know anything about college sports? Because I know literally nothing.”

Most major news networks carried the remarks, while ABC and CBS had special reports and NBC’s Today featured it. Fox News stayed with the Capitol Hill hearing featuring Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle.

Biden has been in Rehoboth Beach, DE in isolation as he recovers from Covid.

Harris is scheduled to travel to Wilmington, DE later today to visit the campaign staff of the newly brander Harris for President operation. “It’s the first full day of our campaign, so I’m heading up to Wilmington, DE later to say ‘hello’ to our staff in HQ. One day down. 105 to go. Together, we’re going to win this,” Harris wrote on X/Twitter.
