‘Misplaced arrogance’ – Director of Eredivisie outfit slams Manchester United after summer deal

Rene Hake joined Manchester United’s coaching staff in July, but he is already missed at Go Ahead Eagles.

The 52-year-old left the Eredivisie job where he was manager to become one of Erik ten Hag’s assistant managers, along with Ruud van Nistelrooy as a double appointment.

Hake and Van Nistelrooy signed contracts that run until June 2026.

The Dutch duo were selected by Ten Hag, who felt it was a good time to refresh his coaching team. Their arrival came at a time Mitchell van der Gaag and Benni McCarthy had left the club, with Steve McClaren to follow them through to the exit door after becoming manager of the Jamaica national team.

Speaking to club media in July, Ten Hag said (via ManUtd.com): “I am delighted that Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge and new energy to the staff. Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level.”

United have struggled this season and currently sit 14th in the Premier League. This has led to speculation over Ten Hag’s future, but after Tuesday’s executive meeting in London, it looks like he will remain in charge for now.

Eredivisie outfit Go Ahead Eagles were not happy with how United approached their manager in the simmer. Their technical director, Paul Bosvelt, felt the situation around Hake’s exit was ‘very strange’.

“I thought it was very strange it took so long for Manchester United to come forward,” Bosvelt told Voetbal International.

“A bit of misplaced arrogance.”

I’d like to know how it was misplaced if United still ended up getting their man, ultimately taking Hake from under Go Ahead Eagles’ nose.

There’s no point crying over spilled milk, is there?

Go Ahead Eagles didn’t appreciate the uncertainty because they were waiting on Hake to make a decision or inform them he would be departing for Old Trafford.

Hake previously worked with Ten Hag at FC Twente, so he has a degree of loyalty to the manager. The opportunity to work at United was too big to turn down.
