Sporting star Morten Hjulmand has distanced himself from speculation that he could be set for a high-profile summer move, insisting he already plays for a ‘very big team’.

Hjulmand enjoyed an excellent debut season in Portugal after swapping Lecce for Sporting last summer, shining at the base of Ruben Amorim’s midfield to help steer the club to a 20th league title.

The 24-year-old made 49 appearances in total across the 2023/24 campaign in all competitions, providing three goals and two assists, and the Dane’s performances have made him a fan favourite in Lisbon, with Amorim ready to make the player part of Sporting’s leadership group.

However, Hjulmand’s outstanding displays have not gone unnoticed among some of Europe’s top clubs and the midfielder has been open with his dream of one day playing in the Premier League.

Manchester United have reportedly been closely monitoring Hjulmand, with the Red Devils on the hunt for midfield reinforcements this summer, while Tottenham have also been credited with a strong interest in the Denmark international.

But it appears Denmark’s Euro 2024 campaign has Hjulmand’s full focus and the ex-Lecce man and is not even considering a move away from Sporting, with his country battling it out in with England, Serbia and Slovenia in Group C.

‘The transfer market? But I’m already playing for a very big team,’ Hjulmand told A Bola when asked whether an impressive tournament in Germany could attract potential suitors in the wake of Denmark’s 1-1 draw with Slovenia.

Hjulmand stressed that his only ‘focus’ for the time being was helping Denmark achieve victory over England later this week.

Asked if he is likely to remain at Sporting, Hjulmand replied: ‘Right now I’m focused on the national team. We will try to get three points on Thursday.

‘We will talk about this after those games.’

While Sporting are gearing up for a summer of comings and goings, Hjulmand is confident he and the team will be ‘ready’ for next season, irrespective of the money they spend on new recruits.

‘I think the team we have now is very strong, but that’s a question for the Sporting director, not for me,’ he continued.

‘I’m focused on the national team now, then I’ll be ready for a new season at Sporting.’

Hjulmand’s eye-catching debut season with Sporting caught the eye of current Manchester United captain – and former Sporting skipper – Fernandes, who raved about the midfielder’s burgeoning potential back in March.

‘I love Sporting’s midfield. I love [Hidemasa] Morita and Hjulmand,’ Fernandes said at the time.

‘They’re two vital players in Sporting’s game, especially when they have to have more of the ball and be more tactically organised.’
