The Nigerian Bar Association has emphasized the need to examine the challenges confronting the legal space to improve the justice system and adapt to changing times.

The President of the Bar, Afam Osigwe, SAN, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja during the NBA Section on Legal Practice press conference held ahead of its forthcoming annual conference scheduled to take place in Jos, Plateau State.

Osigwe noted that addressing issues related to the administration of justice, the judging process, the consistency of court strength, and the challenges faced by practitioners and court users is critical to advancing the justice sector.

“The problems faced by litigants in accessing justice, the length of time and undue delays, and above all, the met or unmet expectations and the public’s perception of the judiciary’s ability to deliver justice need urgent attention,” Osigwe added.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee of the NBA-SLP, Paul Harris Ogbole (SAN), on his part, shared insights into what to expect at the conference, themed “Uncommon Challenges in a Rapidly Changing Legal Environment.”

He highlighted that the conference would address contemporary challenges in the legal field and the impact of global interconnectedness on legal systems.

Ogbole stated that the growing demand for specialized legal services and strategies for navigating new legal frontiers would also be explored.

“The conference will focus on opportunities for legal practitioners, the development of legal tech solutions, the expansion of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, and increased access to justice and legal empowerment initiatives,” he said.

He further urged legal professionals to embrace continuous learning, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and adopt a client-centric approach to effectively navigate the complexities of the modern legal landscape.

“This year’s conference promises to provide a platform for legal practitioners to engage in ongoing learning, collaboration, and mentorship. It will also offer opportunities for professional development, exposure to new ideas and technologies, and continuing education credits. Robust and enriching activities have been specially crafted for young lawyers attending the conference,” Ogbole added.
