Newcastle United official announcement – 2 July 2024:
Spanish and French Champions League entrants confirmed on pre-season schedule alongside a return of the Sela Cup –
Newcastle United will welcome European opposition to St. James’ Park this summer, with UEFA Champions League sides Girona FC and Stade Brestois set to feature in ‘The Sela Weekender’.
Kicking off two days of pre-season action, the Magpies open The Sela Weekender with a friendly fixture against Spanish LaLiga side Girona FC on Friday 9th August (kick-off 7:30pm), before the Sela Cup makes a welcome return the following day.
Backed by the club’s primary sponsor, the Sela Cup returns for a second consecutive year – with a new format that has evolved to offer both men’s and women’s teams the chance to be crowned champions.
Building on a promotion-earning campaign last season, Becky Langley’s Newcastle United Women side will prepare for life in the Barclays Women’s Championship by challenging a soon-to-be-confirmed opponent for the first-ever women’s Sela Cup trophy on Saturday 10th August (kick-off 1pm).
Eddie Howe’s side will continue preparation for the new season by aiming to retain the men’s Sela Cup crown – claimed during the inaugural tournament in 2023 – when they challenge French Ligue 1 team Stade Brestois in a winner-takes-all clash later on the Saturday afternoon (kick-off 4pm).
Speaking about The Sela Weekender, Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales said: “We’re excited that both our men’s and women’s squads will make their return to St. James’ Park for a two-day festival of football. It will give fans the chance to support preparations for a huge 2024/25 campaign.
“Welcoming Champions League calibre opponents reinforces the draw of Newcastle United across the top level of European football, and I’m sure each visiting club will play their part in creating a great weekend.
“We would once again like to thank our partners Sela for their support and expertise which will ensure that The Sela Weekender is an event to remember for fans of every club involved.”
Ibrahim Mohtaseb, Senior Vice President of Sela, added: “The Sela Weekender is a fantastic way to kick-off the new season, offering both the men’s and women’s teams of Newcastle United the chance to win silverware.
“As the club’s principle sponsor, Sela is committed to redefining the matchday experience for the most passionate and dedicated fanbase in football. The Sela Weekender will bring exciting European competition to St. James’ Park ahead of what promises to be a spectacular 2024/25 season.”
