According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle United are getting closer to landing James Trafford, and as long as negotiations go on, the team will reach a resolution with Burnley.

Eddie Howe has identified Trafford as a possible candidate in his pursuit of a new goalkeeper who might serve as Nick Pope’s dependable backup.

Giorgi Mamardashvili was discussed by the Magpies and Valencia, but it soon became apparent that the Georgia international would be beyond their means.

Following Trafford’s exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s final England squad for the Euros last week, Newcastle have concentrated their attention on him.

While Downie acknowledged that the Clarets rejected Newcastle’s initial offer, which was reportedly between £15 and £16 million, he believes that the fact that negotiations have proceeded is a sign that both sides are optimistic about reaching a deal.

Downie made this admission on the Loaded Mag transfer show.

Lewis Hall, who joined the Magpies on loan from Chelsea last season, has already signed a permanent deal at St. James’ Park.

Defender Lloyd Kelly is also set to be signed by Newcastle on a free transfer. The central defender has signed to a five-year contract with the Magpies.

Due to the departure of Loris Karuis, the uncertainty surrounding Martin Dubravka’s future, and the recent recovery of Pope after a long-term injury, the Magpies are hoping to strengthen their goalkeeping options this summer.

Newcastle are expected to be active in the market to bolster their squad and add players in every position.

After suffering an injury crisis last season that ultimately ruined their chances of qualifying for Europe, they are determined to add quality and depth to their squad.

A new striker and midfielder is also expected to arrive at the club this summer, with the Magpies close to completing the signing of defender Kelly and making progress to sign Trafford to add to their goalkeeping department.
