After being forced to take off both Frenkie de Jong and Pedri in the first half of their La Liga encounter against Athletic Club, FC Barcelona have confirmed the nature of the injuries sustained by the duo in an official statement today.
De Jong had to be replaced by Fermin Lopez in the 26th minute after an awkward landing during which he hurt his ankle. Meanwhile, Pedri was replaced on the cusp of half-time by Lamine Yamal after the midfielder went down clutching his hamstring.
Barcelona carried out tests on the midfield duo today at the club’s Ciutat Esportiva complex and have issued a statement regarding their conditions.
“Frenkie de Jong has a lateral ligament sprain in his right ankle. Pedri has a right quadriceps injury. Both players are out and their recovery will determine their availability,” read the statement from the club.
The statement does not provide any update regarding when the pair would be expected to make a comeback.
However, given the nature of the injuries, at least a month out on the sidelines, or even a bit longer, could be expected.
This comes as a big blow for Barcelona as they enter a crucial period in the season, with the Champions League Round of 16 tie against Napoli still hanging in the balance, and the La Liga title race still alive.
