Barcelona have made a significant move by officially registering Wojciech Szczesny as their new goalkeeper.
The 34-year-old Polish shot-stopper has joined the team on a temporary contract until the end of the season, stepping in for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is sidelined with a severe knee injury.
It must be noted that Szczesny trained with the squad for the first time on Friday, just two days after the club confirmed his signing as Ter Stegen’s replacement.
Ter Stegen’s injury made it possible
It has been learned that Ter Stegen’s injury allowed Barcelona to activate a clause in the league’s regulations, which enables clubs to make emergency signings if a player is ruled out for over four months.
Wojciech Szczesny has been registered in La Liga by FC Barcelona.Specifically, Barcelona have been able to use Article 77 of the Regulations. This rule has permitted the club to spend up to 80% of Ter Stegen’s salary to bring in a replacement, even though the transfer window is closed.
Despite being out of competitive action for three and a half months since the Euros, the club has been impressed with his fitness and sharpness in training.
La Liga were informed
La Liga has been kept fully aware of Barcelona’s situation and plans, with the Pole’s registration already validated.
As the team prepares for their next match against Alaves, there is a possibility that Szczesny could be included in the squad. However, whether he will feature in Sunday’s game is still uncertain.
With Ter Stegen out for a long period, Szczesny’s role becomes even more crucial, and his signing could prove to be a pivotal moment in Barcelona’s season as they navigate their upcoming fixtures without their first-choice keeper.
